Our Story

Eyewear Evolution

"I clearly remember the day a few years ago in 2019 when I was struck with a vision that the time had come. After over 20 years of designing eyewear for overseas manufacturing, we can now make them ourselves here at home."

Founder, Tom Kabbash

The ramifications of manufacturing ourselves, locally, are vast. Again, for over 20 years I have been designing and developing eyewear collections made in Italy, China, Taiwan, Japan and even as far as Mauritius but never eyewear manufactured here in the United States. We can streamline and maintain small batch production minimizing waste, reducing worldwide shipping, freight and emissions. We know the who, how and what in the making of our products.

Over 95% of the worlds eyewear units are manufactured and distributed
from China and Taiwan with a small percentage from Japan and Italy.

Our Environment

The first effort in drawing down the damage we are doing to the earth is to minimize our consumption, purchasing and using less of everything including sunglasses. I had to think long and hard about starting Saunt Eyewear, another product in a world of products. I believe the choice we are offering can make a difference so I decided to go for it.

We consider eyewear to be an essential product, optical and reading lenses are often a necessity and in many cases protective sun lenses are too. So when you do make the decision to buy, I hope it is a thoughtful one.

Manufacturing ourselves domestically enables us to more effectively improve our sustainability efforts as they relate to not only our production process but all of our business practices and partnerships.

• Our frames are made of sustainably bio-sourced plants.
• We strive to eliminate single use plastics in every aspect of our business.
• All of our packaging is from recycled materials and is recyclable.
• We practice a policy of Transparent Production.
• We are always looking for opportunities to improve our sustainability efforts.

We are excited about the future and have many new ideas to bring fort.
Thank you for helping us make this happen!

Saunt

SAUNTER
sawn-ter, sahn- ]
to walk or stroll in a leisurely or idle manner.

“I don't like either the word [hike] or the thing. People ought to saunter in the mountains - not 'hike!' Do you know the origin of that word saunter? It's a beautiful word. Away back in the middle ages people used to go on pilgrimages to the Holy Land, and when people in the villages through which they passed asked where they were going they would reply, 'A la sainte terre', 'To the Holy Land.' And so they became known as sainte-terre-ers or saunterers. Now these mountains are our Holy Land, and we ought to saunter through them reverently, not 'hike' through them.”

Founder

Saunt Eyewear founder and designer Tom Kabbash grew up in Venice Beach, California – a cultural crossroads that united the Dog Town surf and skate movement, a community of artists and self-expressed individuals. It was the 80’s and 90’s, and change was everywhere – fashion, music, sports and lifestyle.

Tom, guided by his passion for surfing says he “would always be in the shapers room when [he] was getting a new board – and there were many.”  Tom was fascinated by design and the factory nearly as much as he loved to surf, which sparked him to a world of creating, designing and building cool things.  As a result, he has designed eyewear for some of the most innovative fashion, lifestyle and sports brands in the world.

Today, Saunt reflects Tom’s desire to make products for people to love while striving to make them in a way that’s right with the earth.

"Reading and sauntering and lounging and dosing,
which I call thinking, is my supreme Happiness."
